A great salon experience can leave a person feeling fresh, revived
and ready to conquer the day. A new cut and color can turn heads, but
it can be tough to keep that salon look. Whether it’s vibrant
highlights or an overall color, there are ways to make the look last.
It requires a little maintenance, but with a few easy steps that hot
hair can stay fade-free.
Wait to
wash. Right after getting that color kick, wait to wash hair for
at least 48 hours. Washing too early can strip the color quickly.
The color needs time to seal into the cuticles, so keep locks from
the shower for at least two days. Aside from keeping the color
fresh, it should also keep roots from fading.
Stay
away from alcohol. No, don’t stray away from your favorite
summer time beverage; we’re talking about staying away from hair
products that contain alcohol. These products can dry out hair, so
it’s best to skip them. Be aware that many hairsprays contain
alcohol. It could be time to switch those old products out for some
alcohol-free styling products.
Use a
clarifying shampoo. A clarifying shampoo removes all the buildup
from hair. On a daily basis, hair is introduced to all sorts of
grimy stuff. From pollutants in the air, to hard water deposits, a
clarifying shampoo can remove these deposits. This product is used
before regular shampoo and conditioner to leave hair feeling light
and refreshed. It’s just another healthy step that lets colored
hair thrive longer.
Protect
hair from the sun. Sunscreen protects skin from harmful UV rays,
but hair is exposed to those same rays too. It makes sense that hair
needs a protectant. There are specific hair products for colored
hair that contain sunblock. As always, every product used should be
specifically for colored hair since generic products don’t have
the same nutrients colored hair needs.
Don’t
overheat. Straight irons and hairdryers might be part of an
everyday routine, but hair color fades fast when it’s overheated.
It doesn’t mean ditching the favorite hair tools; it just means a
heat protectant product should be used first.
Keep
touch-up appointments. It’s easy to brush off a
touch-up appointment, especially during summer when life seems to be
crazy, but touch-ups are key. The longer a person waits, the worse
the color looks, and the more costly hair color can get.
