Healthy Summer Hair

During the summer, Talia Moore spends a lot of time in the pool with her kids. The Minneapolis mother of three says the family practically lives in their pool, especially on hot, humid days. While Moore loves to spend time with her children, she realizes all the pool-time zaps the nutrients and color out of her shoulder-length blond hair.

“My hair battles heat and chlorine all summer,” Moore said. “Not to mention I am constantly washing my hair so I don’t wander around with a bizarre ‘pool 'do.’”

Moore is not alone. Everyone struggles to keep their hair healthy during the dog days of summer. In fact, Charmel Heltsley, Campus Director at Minnesota School of Cosmetology, says summer is the most damaging season on hair.

“During the summer our hair is introduced to all sorts of issues,” Heltsley said. “We sweat more so we take more showers and style our hair more often. Plus, we’re in the pool dealing with chlorine and chemicals that suck color and nutrients out of our hair.”

Heltsley offers these tips to protect hair, while still enjoying some fun in the sun.

  • Don’t jump into the pool with dry hair. It might seem strange, but Heltsley says people should get their hair wet before doing a cannonball into the water. “Wet your hair and then add a little shampoo that has some fillers in it, something cheap will work,” Heltsley said. “This prevents your hair from soaking up chemicals.”

  • Rock a Kentucky Derby hat. Protect hair by wearing a hat. “Break out that big floppy hat and have some fun,” she said. “The hat will keep the sun from hitting your hair, plus they look cute.”

  • Eating healthy leads to healthy hair. A healthy diet is important during summer. “Hair is a reflection of what you put into your body,” she said. “If you eat healthy and stay hydrated, you’re choices will be rewarded with beautiful, glossy hair.”

  • Don’t over wash. Summertime usually means a lot of cool showers, but washing hair too frequently isn’t good for it. “It’s best to wash your hair two to three times a week,” Heltsley said. “Break out the dry shampoo if you need to. Just spray that underneath your hair, style as usual, and you’ll be good to go.”

Heltley says there is no need to avoid summer activities, just take a few precautions to keep hair healthy during heat waves. There are also some anti-frizz products and oil products which, when used in moderation, can also infuse life back into hair. For advice on products, ask your hair stylist what’s best.
